I thought I could easily find the answer to what the permissions for /tmp should/can be, but somehow I can’t seem to find anything. Not even here:

I’m hosting on a dreamhost vps, which just notified me that they disallow the use of 777 on directories, which is what tmp seems to have been set to somehow. Is 777 really necessary? I can’t seem to find an authoritative answer.
